Teeth Whitening FAQs
How does it work?
The whitening process is possible due to the ability of the whitening agents to pass through the enamel and dentin into all parts of the tooth. These break down any large coloured molecules that result in tooth discolouration. The structure of the tooth is not altered; the internal tooth colour is simply made lighter.
What about sensitivity?
Tooth sensitivity can be a relatively common side effect of all bleaching procedures. If sensitivity occurs, it is transient and disappears after the completion of bleaching. The gels we use contain potassium nitrate and fluoride desensitising agents for additional comfort.
What about over-the-counter products or internet purchases?
There are a variety of these whitening products. Most of these products do not make any change to the colour of the teeth. Whitening pens and other paint-on whitening products have been shown to mainly remove extrinsic stains and do not change the colour of the teeth. In fact, some of these products have been shown to etch the teeth because of their high acidity.
Who can perform teeth whitening?
Teeth whitening is a form of dentistry and should only be performed by a dentist or another regulated dental professional on the prescription of a dentist. Some beauty salons offer teeth whitening, but this is illegal and it may put your oral health at risk.
Is teeth whitening permanent?
Over time there can be further surface staining and darkening. A simple top-up course of whitening will restore the teeth. We also recommend regular hygienist visits.
Do you guarantee the results?
The overwhelming majority of our patients love the results of whitening. However we cannot predict the actual shade change that will be achieved; what one person may consider absolutely wonderful, another may dismiss as slightly disappointing. So if you wish to embark on a teeth whitening procedure you are agreeing to pay for the materials, laboratory manufactured trays, and our time and expertise, and not for a specific visual outcome.
